Stand Up Christology

What is Stand Up Christology?

There are no upcoming events at the moment. This page is here in case events restart in the future.

It is a chance to have a no-holds barred conversation about religion. We watch clips of comedians and theologians talking about the same things from very different perspectives. We then put our questions about God, faith, the universe and everything to a panel of opinionated volunteers and eat, drink and be chatty.

So is this a church thing then?

Well, we’ve borrowed a church building for the evening (thank you St Mary’s!) but the team behind the event include people with a wide range of beliefs and faith backgrounds from clergy to lapsed Christians to die-hard atheists and that’s the way we like it. We are not interested in conversion just in good conversation.

Are you sure you’re allowed to do this?

I completed the Fresh Expressions Mission Shaped Ministry training programme in 2011 back when I was still a “proper Christian” which gave me the training to lead events like this. Admittedly, this is probably a bit more experimental than the course tutors were expecting but, yes, it is allowed.

I am very grateful to the team at St Mary’s, Guildford who have loaned us their building for the evening. Please be aware that Stand Up Christology is an independent event and is not part of St Mary’s ministry; they have very kindly allowed us to use their church but they are not responsible for the event or its content. If you have any questions or comments please direct them to Clare at clare.truman@gmail.com.

How much does it cost? Do I need a ticket?

No tickets are required and it does not cost anything!

If you are able to indicate that you are planning to come by responding on our Facebook page that would help us plan how many chairs to put out and how much food to buy but it is also ok to just rock up on the night.

There is no charge to attend.

Who can attend?

The event is open to everyone over the age of eighteen. You can be Christian, atheist, undecided, confused, bemused, of any faith or none. All we ask is that you remember we are here for good conversation not conversion. Please, be as frank as you like about the ideas but as nice as possible to each other.

How do I find you?

Click on the link to find a map to St Mary’s Church, Quarry St. GuildfordQuarry Street is at the bottom of Guildford High Street, opposite White Lion Walk. The church is next to the Star Inn.

Do you need any help running this?

Yes, please! We want as many people contributing to this event as possible. Between publicising the event among friends and colleagues , contributing ideas for discussion questions or comedy clips, moving equipment to and from the church, serving food, washing up, planning future events – we need a lot of volunteers. If you would like to get involved please contact Clare at clare.truman@gmail.com
